The Austin Air Bedroom Machine® was used in clinical trials at the University of John Hopkins to reduce Nitrogen Dioxide levels in the homes of local residents. Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) is a gas often present in homes where there are gas stoves. High levels of NO2 are particularly dangerous for people with COPD. The gas can dramatically increase symptoms of coughing, wheezing and chest tightness. The results were dramatic. NO2 dropped in the kitchen by 27% and continued to stay low for the length of the study. Within a week NO2 levels in the bedroom dropped by 23%.
In a second study at Johns Hopkins, the Bedroom Machine ® was placed in the homes of women, living with a smoker, who were either pregnant or with very young babies. What exactly is a HEPA filter?
The HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) filter was developed by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission to filter out sub-micron particles. All true medical grade HEPA is laser-tested and must remove a minimum of 99.97% of all particulate matter greater in size 0.3 microns. Austin Air’s HEPA filters also remove 99% of all particles larger than 0.1 microns. All Austin Air purifiers feature true medical grade HEPA filters.

How do I know when my filter needs to be replaced?
There are two indications that your filter needs to be replaced:
- An unpleasant odor coming from the unit means that the carbon in the filter is full and the filter needs to be replaced, and
- Significantly reduced airflow coming from the unit means that the HEPA filter is full and the filter needs to be replaced.
How reliable is the construction of the purifiers?
The entire body of the air purifier is made of solid steel, which has been welded together to prevent any rattling. The paint used is powder coating, baked at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. This process eliminates any odor or off gas emissions while also enhancing the unit’s durability.
How long will my unit last?
The unit is designed to last a lifetime when properly maintained. All Austin purifiers feature a five-year mechanical warranty. Should the unit fail outside of the warranty period, there is an Austin repair program. The filter is designed to last for five years under normal residential use.
How much electricity is required to run the air purifier?
The purifiers use an ordinary 120 volt outlet. Maximum draw is approximately 147 watts on the high setting or 1 cent per hour, average cost.
Do Austin Air purifiers remove radon in a nuclear situation?
Austin purifiers do not remove radon gas from the air. However, radon gas does affect the airborne particles which create what are known as radon daughters. Austin purifiers will remove radon daughters from the air. An indoor air professional should be consulted if you believe you have radon gas in your air.
